GRI disorders are rare genetic conditions that affect how the brain develops and works
The Cause: They happen because of a tiny change in a child’s DNA—specifically in the GRIN, GRIA, GRIK or GRID genes.
The Effect: These genes are vital for brain communication. When they don’t work correctly, it can lead to seizures, developmental delays, movement problems, and autism.
The Reality: There is currently no cure, but GRI-UK is here to support families, raise awareness, and fund research.
While every child is different, many individuals with a GRI disorder face similar daily challenges:
- Brain & Nerves: Seizures (epilepsy), learning difficulties, and delayed speech or motor skills.
- Movement & Muscles: Low muscle tone and problems with balance or coordination.
- Everyday Life: Sleep issues, behavioral challenges, and sometimes digestive problems.
These conditions start in infancy or early childhood. Because they are so rare, many families struggle to get a diagnosis and find the right support.
